The Best Times of Day for Wedding Photos: Lighting Tips from a Pro
When it comes to stunning wedding photos, lighting is everything. As a documentary-style wedding photographer in Central Florida, I’m always chasing the perfect light to create those moody, atmospheric shots that couples love. But what are the best times of day to get that magical lighting for your wedding photos? Here are my top tips for timing your portraits to perfection.
1. Golden Hour: The Ultimate Magic Light
Golden hour, which happens during the hour before sunset, is hands down the best time for wedding photos. The soft, warm glow adds a dreamy, romantic vibe to your portraits, creating those breathtaking, moody shots that feel straight out of a fairytale. Central Florida’s sunsets are especially beautiful, and whether you’re by the beach, in a lush garden, or at a rustic barn, this is when the light is at its absolute best. It’s why I always recommend scheduling a few extra sunset photos as part of your wedding timeline!
2. Mid-Day Light: High and Bright
Mid-day light, especially in Central Florida, can be harsh and unflattering if not handled carefully. The bright sun creates strong shadows and high contrast, which can make photos feel less flattering. However, as a seasoned wedding photographer, I know how to work with this light by seeking out shaded areas or using reflective surfaces to soften the effect. While it’s not the ideal time for portraits, mid-day is great for capturing candid moments, especially during the ceremony or cocktail hour.
3. Blue Hour: Dreamy and Moody
Blue hour happens just after the sun sets but before it gets completely dark. This is where moody wedding photography really shines! The cool, soft tones give the photos an ethereal, almost cinematic feel. Central Florida weddings often wrap up around this time, so I always suggest sneaking out for a few romantic shots before the reception starts. The combination of twilight and twinkling venue lights can create some seriously stunning photos.
4. Ceremony Timing: Avoid the Harshest Light
If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony in Central Florida, it’s important to think about the timing. Mid-afternoon light can be strong and less forgiving, especially if your venue doesn’t have much shade. Try to plan your ceremony either earlier in the day (late morning) or later in the afternoon (closer to golden hour) for softer, more flattering light. This will make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your wedding photos.
5. Nighttime Magic: Get Creative with Lighting
Don’t underestimate the power of nighttime photos! Whether it’s under the stars, twinkling fairy lights, or a glowing Central Florida moon, evening photos can be absolutely magical. With the right use of artificial lighting, sparklers, or candles, we can create dramatic, moody shots that feel cinematic and unique to your wedding. This is where we can get really creative and make the most of the beautiful Florida evening atmosphere.
